I first studied at the Leningrad Music School with <strong data-start=\"226\" data-end=\"273\">Irina Nikolaevna Bogdanovich (Zelenetskaya)<\/strong>. Irina Nikolaevna herself graduated from the <strong data-start=\"319\" data-end=\"391\">Moscow Conservatory together with Mstislav Leopoldovich Rostropovich<\/strong>, studying under the famous pedagogue <strong data-start=\"429\" data-end=\"461\">Semyon Matveyevich Kozolupov<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"464\" data-end=\"852\">Later, at the music college in <strong data-start=\"495\" data-end=\"512\">Yekaterinburg<\/strong>, I studied with <strong data-start=\"529\" data-end=\"564\">Vladimir Nikolayevich Khramtsov<\/strong>, who had once been <strong data-start=\"584\" data-end=\"613\">a student of Rostropovich<\/strong> at the Moscow Conservatory. I completed my conservatory studies with <strong data-start=\"683\" data-end=\"713\">Sergey Fyodorovich Peshkov<\/strong>, who had studied under <strong data-start=\"737\" data-end=\"824\">Georgy Dmitrievich Tsomyk \u2014 a student of Konstantin Alexandrovich Minyar-Beloruchev<\/strong> \u2014 at the Ural Conservatory.<\/p><p data-start=\"854\" data-end=\"1086\">For this reason, when on <strong data-start=\"879\" data-end=\"899\">January 27, 1997<\/strong>, the <strong data-start=\"905\" data-end=\"982\">snow-covered city of Yekaterinburg welcomed Maestro Mstislav Rostropovich<\/strong> for a concert, it became <strong data-start=\"1008\" data-end=\"1085\">a historic event not only for the entire city, but also personally for me<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"1088\" data-end=\"1723\">At that time, I was <strong data-start=\"1108\" data-end=\"1160\">a student at the P. I. Tchaikovsky Music College<\/strong>. I was lucky enough to buy a ticket \u2014 <strong data-start=\"1199\" data-end=\"1246\">for the second row, right next to the stage<\/strong>. I arrived early. While I was taking off my coat in the foyer of the Philharmonic Hall, the central doors suddenly opened, and a group of <strong data-start=\"1385\" data-end=\"1422\">tall, imposing men in black suits<\/strong> entered \u2014 four or five of them. These were <strong data-start=\"1466\" data-end=\"1480\">bodyguards<\/strong>, and they seemed to be guarding above all <strong data-start=\"1523\" data-end=\"1534\">a cello<\/strong>, carried in a large wheeled case. <strong data-start=\"1569\" data-end=\"1615\">Rostropovich followed slightly behind them<\/strong>. At that moment, I realized that <strong data-start=\"1649\" data-end=\"1722\">I had a chance not only to see and hear him, but also to approach him<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"1725\" data-end=\"2207\"><strong data-start=\"1725\" data-end=\"1783\">Rostropovich played magnificently \u2014 Dvo\u0159\u00e1k\u2019s Concerto.<\/strong> I was struck by the <strong data-start=\"1804\" data-end=\"1853\">powerful sound, filled with incredible energy<\/strong>. The intensity and message of his playing were overwhelming. His <strong data-start=\"1919\" data-end=\"1965\">phenomenal technique and singing cantilena<\/strong> sent shivers down my spine. Toward the very end of the performance, as he was finishing, I nervously began to think about <strong data-start=\"2088\" data-end=\"2117\">how I might get backstage<\/strong>. The problem was that <strong data-start=\"2140\" data-end=\"2206\">the bodyguards were standing by the steps leading to the stage<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"2209\" data-end=\"2585\">Then <strong data-start=\"2214\" data-end=\"2246\">the hall erupted in applause<\/strong>, and people rushed forward with flowers. At the moment when the bodyguards moved toward the crowd, <strong data-start=\"2346\" data-end=\"2368\">I ran to the stage<\/strong>, hurried up the steps, and <strong data-start=\"2396\" data-end=\"2434\">hid behind the orchestra musicians<\/strong>. They shielded me with their instruments. <strong data-start=\"2477\" data-end=\"2549\">I slipped backstage and found myself at Rostropovich\u2019s dressing room<\/strong>, which he had just entered as well.<\/p><p data-start=\"2587\" data-end=\"3265\">When he saw me, he looked surprised, but the pause was brief \u2014 <strong data-start=\"2650\" data-end=\"2672\">the guards arrived<\/strong>. After reassuring them that everything was fine, <strong data-start=\"2722\" data-end=\"2772\">Rostropovich invited me to have some green tea<\/strong>. He loved green tea. A teapot and cups were already waiting on the table. <strong data-start=\"2847\" data-end=\"2922\">My mouth went completely dry; I forgot everything I had planned to say.<\/strong> There was no question of drinking tea \u2014 I was far too overwhelmed. Looking at me, he smiled and asked <strong data-start=\"3025\" data-end=\"3072\">who I was, what my name was, and what I did<\/strong>.
